I think your second proposition has the most potential at this point. Considered opposing geometries for above and below ground? Can below be orthogonally based and above spherically based?
Look at Buckminster Fuller - esp. his Biosphere (also in Montreal)....
Some compelling arguments for an holistic approach to engineering and architecture.
